The use of a myofunctional device in an aged care population for oral care and swallowing: A feasibility study

Purpose: Poor oral health is a known predictor of aspiration pneumonia in vulnerable populations such as the elderly and chronically ill. This study examined feasibility using myofunctional devices during 5-week intervention for management care dysphagia residents residential aged-care facility. Method: Feasibility was determined through evaluation recruitment retention rates, adherence to intervention, resident staff acceptability intervention. Thirteen residents, ages 74–99, participated 10 completed feedback on post-intervention questionnaires. Results: Enrolment rates were 61.9% 92.3%, respectively. Adherence use device 92.6% at 3 weeks, 89.3% 5 weeks 12 participants who protocol. The considered acceptable ease use, comfort, amount support required. Conclusion: Results indicate that further research exploring an aged population hygiene feasible.
